At every school event, there's that one child.
While others rush in, this child hangs back. Watches. Takes it all in quietly. Maybe holds onto Mama's hand a little longer.
And often, a well-meaning adult will say: "Ohhh, are you shy?"
Here's a different way to see it.
Some children are observers. They do not leap before they look. They study a situation, understand it fully, and then when they are ready they step in with complete confidence.
This is not shyness. This is a thinking style. And it is a deeply intelligent one.
Every child is different. The loud ones, the quiet ones, the ones who lead and the ones who watch all of them are learning in their own way, at their own pace. The child who says the least in a group often has the most to say when given the right moment.
If your child takes time to warm up, please don't worry. Please don't push. And please don't let anyone tell them they are too quiet.
They are not too quiet. They are paying attention.
And one day, when they are ready, they will show you everything they have been thinking about all along.
